De Botton has a wonderful ability to weave in all kinds of unexpected references to artists and writers, such as Charles Baudelaire and Edward Hopper. Still, there’s a good deal of cleverness and fun to enjoy in The Art of Traveland readers not familiar with the figures de Botton introduces if you vijaar read Huysmans or de Maistre, for example will likely enjoy this cast of characters and, one hopes, eagerly pick up some of the books discussed.
The Art of Travel is a wise and utterly original book.
