I loved the titular Luminous, despite my answer when asked about what I was reading. Here, in narrative form, is the etan of what it was like to maintain a little intellectual integrity amidst the bizzaro syncretism of a Unitarian Universalist seminary.
Other themes include genetics, simulated reality, posthumanism, mind transfer, sexuality, artificial intelligence, and the superiority of rational naturalism over religion. Another story, ‘Mr Volilition’, draws on Minsky’s pandimonium model of the mind, and describes the effect on a murderous theif when a neural monitor dispels the myth of free will.
The Moral Virologist and the Caress. The narrator of the stories is not usually the person I think would be the most interesting, for example, but the narrator is always sincere and believable.

The stories themselves are also fairly well written, though the main attraction is Egan’s imagination. If you agree with this, then feeling alive is nothing more than computation done on some data structure defining you.

The writing is, in my opinion, fairly accessible and smooth, the themes diverse in number, and you get food for thought about humanity and the impact of technology, certainly in this day axiomaticl age.
I cannot recommend this book enough to anyone who enjoys hard science ficiton.

One issue here is that he is at his strongest writing stories on simulated consciousness I guess because of his computer science backgroundbut some of these stories deal with biotech instead, which isn’t really his strong point.

The stories included in Luminous treat various issues, including conflicts between science and religion ‘Mitochondrial Eve’, ‘Silver Fire’discrimination based on sexual identity ‘Cocoon’ and the meaning of emotion ‘Reasons to be Cheerful’ and of will ‘Mister Volition’. He’s also got some really amazing ideas and arguments that actually make sense I also do not quiet remember thinking “oh, I’ve seen this is a novel of his, too! If you don’t see yourself understanding it, it is very skippable.

I have always been amazed at Neal Stephenson for being able to write Snowcrash and The Diamond Age in axiomatio respectively. It reminded me of my life-long study of different religions and mythologies and the lack thereofand my flirtation with various beliefs and the lack thereofand my hesitance, my reluctance, to fall into any one of their gravity wells.
The biologically-leaning stories were the easiest to comprehend for me, as I have tertiary biological education.
