DeVeaux provides academic clout and formal rigor, bringing to bear a strong foundation in musicological methodology.

Two introductory chapters covering instrumentation, musical elements, and jazz forms and practices serve the second goal, as do analyses of seventy-eight listening examples across the volume. It opens with a celeste, and it’s gidsins corny.
